Definition: set of electrical fluctuations in a sonar receiver in the absence of any sound pressure input

EXAMPLE Electrical and thermal processes in the sensor elements and electronic components, processes that are inherent to sonar operation.

Note 1 to entry: In a digital receiver system, the electrical voltage can be converted to a digital representation of the original voltage.

Note 2 to entry: It is possible for a sonar or transducer to experience self-noise that is other than electrical in origin (sometimes termed "platform noise" or "deployment noise"). Examples are structural noise from moorings during deployment, and flow-noise caused by turbulent flow of the water medium around the sensing element.
